Aboriginal history, culture and stories of the Hawkesbury River - Dyarubbin. This story map shows important sites in the Ebenezer area to better understand the significance of this ancient place.

This Story Map was inspired by an extraordinary discovery. In 2017, a long-lost document came to light in the Mitchell Library in Sydney: a handwritten list of 178 Aboriginal names for places on Dyarubbin, compiled by local Presbyterian minister, the Reverend John McGarvie in 1829. This precious list can help restore at least some of the lost Darug and Darkinjung landscapes, and it offers rich insights into Aboriginal life and culture on the river.

In 1970 a cobble chopper (cutting tool) artefact was found on the Nepean River at Castlereagh. It was found to have dated back 50,000 years.

11 Stories from the River Dyarubbin is a series of self-guided audio walks, sharing stories specific to 11 different locations along the banks of Dyarubbin (the Hawkesbury River).

Underscored by original music, the audio walks are designed to inspire, inform and deepen the listener’s experience of the river. They include stories of Dharug people and the enduring relationship that Dharug people have with Country; colonial settlement and frontier violence; farming, floods and famine; local ecology; use, development and sustainability; and more.

Listeners are advised that the link and the 11 audio walks contain stories of historical violence, as well as images, voices and names of deceased persons now resting in the Dreaming.
